The Patent Court of Korea has dismissed Meta Platforms, Inc.’s claim in a lawsuit seeking cancellation of a trademark invalidation trial decision.

Court Dismisses Claim in Trademark Case Involving MetaVu

In connection with MetaVu Co., Ltd.’s prior-registered trademark “metavu”, Meta Platforms, Inc., the global technology company operating Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, filed a lawsuit seeking cancellation of a trademark invalidation trial decision.
On June 25, 2026, the Patent Court of Korea rendered a judgment dismissing Meta Platforms, Inc.’s claim.

This case concerned the likelihood of confusion between MetaVu Co., Ltd.’s prior-registered trademark “metavu” and the trademark “METAVIEW” later registered by Meta Platforms, Inc.

Result Meta Platforms, Inc.’s claim dismissed

The Court’s Finding

The Patent Court found that the two trademarks are identical or similar in pronunciation, as both are pronounced “MetaVu” in Korean. The Court also found that, for certain designated goods including computer software, there is a likelihood of confusion as to the source of goods or services.

This judgment is consistent with the earlier decision of the Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board, which accepted MetaVu’s position in July 2025. Meta Platforms, Inc. challenged that decision before the Patent Court, but the Court reached the same conclusion and dismissed the claim.
